When I was designing Scandi Barn I knew from the outset that I was keen for the space to have a minimal and calm aesthetic. Not only did this space need to be flexible in terms of how we use it (work, photo shoots, relaxation, entertaining and more) but I also wanted a design that I could switch up in order to change the vibe of the room with the seasons. I like the space to lean more Scandi in the winter so I can benefit from the joy of ‘hygge’, but in the warmer spring and summer months I wanted to be able to weave in a Mediterranean vibe with more natural textures, earth tones etc. It was for that reason I was keen to keep the window treatments minimal so that they would work seamlessly with the surroundings throughout the iterations the room took as the seasons change.

I was delighted to find Wovn Home: a direct to consumer window treatment business, which during a pandemic was perfect as I could design and order everything from the comfort and safety of my home. Today, I’m going to review Wovn Home custom shades and share my process of ordering and installing (so easy!) the custom roman shades I ordered from Wovn Home.

Custom window treatments can often get expensive, right? I know I’ve avoided them in the past for that very reason. Yet, some how many of the off-the-shelf options are never quite right. They’re either too long, too short, not the right color, or their width is off slightly, and you end up with a window covering that catches your eye for all the wrong reasons. Sound familiar?! If so, Wovn Home will be your window treatment savior!

The Options

First off, it’s good for you to know that they offer custom shades and drapes (I’m installing some of Wovn Home drapes in our guest bedroom this spring, so stay tuned for that!). Also, you can order your drapes or shades in a variety of styles to match your aesthetic. For example, if you’re aiming for a more traditional look you could order your drapes in an elegant Euro pleat or shades in a Ribbed style. As I said at the top, I was keen to continue the minimal, Scandinavian feeling with my custom shades so I went for their Flat shade.

I loved how the custom Flat shades came out because they sit inside the window opening and are perfectly flush with the wall. This was important to me because when I designed the windows I opted to have no window trim. This was in order to have as little as possible to distract the eye from the striking and oh-so-beautiful Architectural Series windows I chose from Andersen Windows. The Wovn Home shades compliment the windows perfectly by gently softening the modern, clean lines, while also adding texture, warmth and privacy.

For many of us when we come to invest in custom window treatments we don’t want to pick a fabric that’s so specific we could never redecorate, right?! At least for me as a serial redecorator this is very much the case! That’s why I loved that Wovn Home have a stylish, well-edited selection of fabrics to choose from that doesn’t feel overwhelming. It’s easy to order samples (you get 5 for $5 and they ship free), so you can try them out in your space before you make the final selection.

I went for the Soft Snow linen and I love how they feel — so tactile! We’re not too overlooked and didn’t need blackout so we went for flat shades with a privacy lining. I’d recommend always getting privacy liner as a minimum with custom shades otherwise you will see all the cording behind the fabric. I didn’t want a stiff or formal looking shade so I was a little nervous about the privacy lining but it works so well and the linen still has an effortless, casual feel to it.

Installation

Something else I was nervous about but totally shouldn’t have been? Installation! Honestly, it was so, so easy. You simply drill two brackets into either side of the window and then you just push and click the pre-made shade into the brackets. The final step is to screw the cord holder into the wall to guide the chain and keep it all looking neat. Overall, I would definitely use Wovn Home for custom shades and drapes again. It’s so much easier than having to have people come and measure, then go somewhere to pick samples, go back to order, then have more people come and install them for you. I saved money and time and ended up with a product I love!
