I can’t wait for the first Bright.Bazaar book to be published because there’s a section on my bedroom. I explain how I made colour work in the space to create a room that is at once both colourful and calm. In fact, I’m itching to blog various parts of my space but I think it’s exciting to wait until the book has been published so that it’s revealed all in one go, along with the relevant information about the inspirations behind my decorating decisions. I can’t wait to share it with you all!

In the meantime, I thought the forthcoming A/W13 collection from BHS was a great way to show how to decorate with bright colours in a bedroom. The key to making bright colour a success in a bedroom scheme is to focus your efforts behind the bed. By making a colour statement behind the bed you effectively create a room of two halves: it feels bright and cheerful when you are in the room changing or getting ready for the day; by night, when you are in bed, it feels calm and relaxing as the energising bright shades of the space are behind you. You can temper strong hues, such as the Paris Green seen in this colourful bedroom, by layering in softer patterns across textiles. This is achieved here with by dressing the bed with a series of welcoming patchwork floral printed bedding, throws and pillows. What inspires you about this bedroom space? How do you bring colour into your bedroom schemes?

  1. I love that green wall, it’s divine! Great advice on the colour behind the bed. I want to paint our back wall a deep moody blue. I have lots of colour and pattern everywhere in my home, often layered over white. In the bedroom I have a white bedspread with lots of coloured pillows and a throw.

Can’t wait to see your book – would love to feature it on my blog πŸ™‚ x

  2. love this post!! Working behind the bed tip is awesome and gives such a clear direction for making a bright and beautiful bedroom .

  3. love that green! It is vibrant and yet sophisticated + calming. the perfect hue for a bedroom retreat! I have never thought much of how I combine color and patterns … i somehow just pick what I like and hope for the best! Thanks to you, now I have a rule to go by!

Can’t wait to see your place too MR! Have been patiently waiting for the book and yes, I want your autograph!

  4. I don’t do colours in my bedroom anymore. I once made the mistake, yes I call it a mistake, to paint one wall in our bedroom in burgundy and it cured me for life, hahaha After only a few days it started irritating the core of my being. Since then all my bedrooms have had a soft colour palette with white walls.

When will your book be published?

    • @Lisa – Oh no! Such a shame that it put you off for life as I really think colour can do wonders in the bedroom. Of course it doesn’t have to be as bright or bold as this as you can still achieve a soothing palette by decorating with softer shades of a given colour, so in this case you could use a cool mint cream instead of the stronger emerald shade. Still, I do love white walls with layered brights too so I’m sure your place is really lovely! My book is due out next Spring – very excited!

  5. Love this room it feels so cosy and bohemian. I have a raspberry colored wall behind the bed. i was thinking to color it dark gray-the room has a lots of light (3 windows), but now I may think it again. Love this color palette that you suggest.
Interested about your book, when it will be published?

Oh and yes, have to say how lovely blog you have. Love the home tours. That is my passion to peek into others people homes πŸ˜‰

    • @Valentina – Raspberry coloured walls behind your bed sounds so lovely! I vote that you keep it and I’m pleased today’s post has inspired you to do just that – yay! My book is due to be published next spring and includes lots and lots of home tours so I hope you will find it inspirational.

  6. Will I can’t wait until your book comes out too! What a treat to see your home:) I love painted rustic features and the wall behind the bed is perfect. Good idea about the colour behind the bed to greet you. M x

  7. I love the idea of colour behind the bed! I’ve been working on a headboard for a while and now I’m thinking maybe I should add some colour… maybe mint or turquoise πŸ˜‰
I also love the lamp hanging next to the bed, so sweet!

  8. Dear Will, I adore this room, the feeling is just great. Can’t wait to see your book – I’m sure it will be an explosion of colour and fabulousness πŸ˜‰
    Take care
